CFIA Officially Recognizes CSHB Biosecurity Standard

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has officially recognized the Canadian Swine Health Board (CSHB) National Swine Farm-level Biosecurity Standard. The CSHB developed the standard with a technical expert committee and input from over 100 biosecurity experts in Canada and abroad. CFIA has been conducting a rigourous review to ensure it met the requirements for their official recognition.

"This official recognition by CFIA raises the profile of our National Swine Farm-level Biosecurity Standard," said Bill Ballantyne, Chair of the CSHB’s Biosecurity Advisory Committee. "This third-party recognition of our Standard will also provide reassurances to customers that appropriate steps to protect animal health are being followed."

The aim of the National Swine Farm-level Biosecurity Standard is to assist the swine industry attain and apply the strategic objectives of bio-exclusion, bio-management and bio-containment of swine pathogens and zoonoses in Canada. The Standard is available at http://www.swinehealth.ca.

The CFIA usually develops national biosecurity standards in collaboration with industry organizations and other stakeholders. The National Swine Farm-level Biosecurity Standard was unique in being developed by the CSHB in collaboration with CFIA and other industry and government stakeholders. The CSHB was formed to proactively address swine health challenges through leadership, coordination and support in the management of the health of the Canadian swine herd. Its members include the Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians, the Canadian Association of Veterinary Colleges, the Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement, the Canadian Meat Council and the Canadian Pork Council.
