Position Announcement (Veterinary Students): Swine Medicine Education Center Student Summer Projects

The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) is accepting student applications for four summer research positions. The SMEC will have a variety of research projects and educational material developmental projects for veterinary students to lead. These projects are an excellent opportunity for students to interact with faculty and the SMEC including access to production facilities at AMVC in Audubon, Iowa. Furthermore, these projects are typically designed to find answers to complex problems or to gain additional evidence for particular methodologies placing students in the position of pioneering new approaches to clinical swine medicine.

Projects will be designed, managed, executed, and summarized by the student in charge while all work and planning will be overseen by SMEC faculty. The successful applicants will join a team of veterinary and graduate students and be involved in conducting research on several projects beyond those they are managing. Current and anticipated projects include work in the Swine Intensive Studies Laboratory at Iowa State University CVM and field-trial work on applied pharmacology, clinical surveillance of populations, and application of emerging communications technology to disseminate best practices. All work will be performed to a standard that supports the goal of publishing final results in either a peer-reviewed journal, professional publication, or presentation at a professional conference, all of which provide opportunities to disseminate information gained and serve as excellent opportunities for students to further network with professionals.

Interested Veterinary Students should submit a resume or curriculum vitae with a cover letter explaining your experience and interest with swine to Dr. Karriker immediately. All experience levels will be considered. Applications will be accepted until qualified candidates are identified. Students will be paid $12/hr over the course of 12 weeks. Attendance at a weekly planning meeting and some preparatory work will be required during the spring semester but limited to that which does not interfere with veterinary studies. Housing is available for out of state students.
