FMD Confirmed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

A report dated September 14, 2005 from Dr Mabela N'Lemba, Director Head of Department, Directorate for Animal Production and Health (DPSA), Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock, Kinshasa confirms Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in 97 of the 129 bovine samples collected in May, 2005. The affected regions include Ruzizi, Uvira. The diagnosis was made at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute, South Africa. The report indicates the etiologic agent to be FMD virus types SAT1, SAT2, SAT3 and A.
