European Commission Funds Effort to Control FMD
September 7, 2005 —
The European Commission (EC) will provide $7.2 million to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) European Commission for the Control of FMD (EUFMD). Keith Sumption, Secretary of the EUFMD, indicated that the funding would be used to strengthen the veterinary services of FMD positive countries to enhance surveillance and control activities with the ultimate goal of preventing the entry of FMD into Europe. The FMD virus is currently present in 60 countries around the world. This funding would also allow FAO to send experts to affected countries within 24 hours of identifying an outbreak.
