OIE Concludes Porcine Plasma Not Likely the Source of PED Spread

The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) convened an expert panel to evaluate the global occurrence of disease caused by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. It was the opinion of the panel, and subsequently endorsed by the OIE Scientific Commission on Animal Diseases, that "direct transmission of PEDv occurs through ingestion of virus contaminated faeces and that indirect transmission occurs through faeces contaminated trucks, personnel, equipment or other faeces contaminated materials." In addition, it was the position of the panel and the Commission that pig blood products such as spray dried plasma were not a likely source of infection if good manufacturing practices were adhered to and biosecurity protocols followed. The OIE published their findings as part of a Technical Factsheet on PED which can be viewed online here.
