PEDv Update – 6/19/2013

AASV
AASV staff have updated the AASV PED web page with the following information:

  • The latest case report from the VDLs for the week of 6/10/2013.
  • Photos from an infected nursery provided by Drs. Matt Ackerman and Amber Stricker
  • A timeline of an early PEDv introduction provided by Dr. Matt Ackerman, and
  • Information on disinfectants.

We received 43 completed epidemiologic surveys (including 18 control herds). The data has been scrubbed of any personal identifiers, validated and entered into a database at AASV. The USDA Center for Epidemiology and Animal Health (CEAH) will begin analysis this week. The objective of the survey is to attempt to identify how the virus was introduced into the U.S. swine herd. While it is unlikely that this survey will identify the specific route of introduction, we are hoping it will provide a hypothesis that we might then be able to research.

NPB/NPPC
The scientific working group received 21 research proposals targeting PEDv. The group reviewed the proposals and identified a group of projects that they felt best addressed the priority research questions involving epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnostics, environment, etc. The Pork Board’s Swine Health Committee reviewed the working group’s recommendations and made a final selection of projects to fund. The research work will be beginning shortly.

USDA
The USDA National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) will be taking over coordination of the VDL submission reporting from ISU-VDL. This decision was made to facilitate data collection from all labs involved and to provide consistency in reporting.

USDA CEAH can now access the survey data and begin an initial epidemiologic analysis. We will also be meeting with CEAH next week to discuss the next steps from an epidemiological standpoint including analysis of interherd disease transmission.
