NPB Call for Proposals: Euthanasia, PCVAD, Public Health and Antimicrobial Use/Resistance

The National Pork Board (NPB) is soliciting research proposals for the following topics: on-farm euthanasia, PCVAD, Public Health and Antimicrobial Use/Resistance. The deadline for submission is 5:00 pm CDT April 28, 2009.

On-farm Euthanasia of Swine
It is inevitable that in every swine production system animals will become ill or injured in such a way that euthanasia will be necessary. However, there are a limited number of humane methods available for pork producers to use, especially for suckling (up to 12 lbs) and nursery pigs (up to 70 lbs). The National Pork Board's Animal Welfare Committee has reserved $500,000 specifically for on-farm euthanasia research and is soliciting proposals that are multi-disciplinary in their approach to:

  • Validate existing recommended methods of euthanasia of swine, especially for suckling and nursery pigs
  • Identify and validate new and novel methods of euthanasia of swine.

The full RFP and instructions for formatting and submission can be found at: http://www.pork.org in the far right column. Please read the solicitation description for project proposals carefully.

PCVAD, Public Health And Antimicrobial Use/Resistance
Proposals are also being solicited in the areas of Swine Health - PCVAD, Public Health and Antimicrobial Use/Resistance. Please see the separate RFP for these areas on the Web site at http://www.pork.org in the far right column.

DEADLINE: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 - 5:00 pm C.D.T.
