Position Announcement: Director, ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory

Iowa State University (ISU) College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) is seeking applicants for Director of the ISU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). The position will be offered at the rank of associate or full professor, or senior clinician. The Director provides leadership, vision, planning and management of the ISU VDL consistent with AAVLD accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities include: managing the professional practice functions of the laboratory, managing the financial and business affairs of the laboratory, oversight of state and national surveillance program testing, advising the VDPAM Chair on evaluation of VDL faculty and staff service responsibilities, and advising the VDPAM Chair concerning programmatic needs consistent with the strategic plan and the mission of the department, college and university. The VDL Director also represents the VDL on the Dean's Cabinet as a voting member. The director will interact on a regular basis with the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association and other stakeholder groups. This position is approximately 85% commitment to administration with additional responsibilities in professional practice, research or teaching.

The VDL is a full service (racing chemistry, toxicology, bacteriology, pathology, virology, serology, and molecular diagnostics) AAVLD accredited laboratory with over 120 faculty and staff. Emphasis is on food animal production including dairy, swine, beef, small ruminants, poultry, and disciplines of animal welfare, epidemiology, statistics, theriogenology, and diagnostic medicine. Collaborative opportunities in Ames include: the ISU Department of Animal Science, the National Animal Disease Center, the National Veterinary Services Laboratory, the Center for Veterinary Biologics, and multiple specialties throughout the College of Veterinary Medicine and other University Departments.

Required Qualifications

SENIOR CLINICIAN: DVM or equivalent degree, at least 6 years experience as a practitioner/ clinician (or equivalent), demonstrated expertise in diagnostic medicine

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR: DVM or equivalent degree with an advanced degree, demonstrated expertise in diagnostic medicine.

FULL PROFESSOR: In addition to the qualifications listed above for associate professor, a record of scholarship and national expertise in diagnostic medicine.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree and/or board certification in an appropriate discipline related to diagnostic medicine. A record of success in administration of a service unit. Practice experience with documented expertise in food supply veterinary medicine.
