Carlos Pijoan Graduate Student Fellowship in Swine Medicine

The University of Minnesota's College of Veterinary Medicine has announced the formation of the Carlos Pijoan Graduate Student Fellowship in Swine Medicine. The goal is to train the next generation of specialists in swine health and production to conduct applied research on the transmission, control, and eradication of economically significant diseases of swine.

During their graduate training, students will become exposed to an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving, encompassing the areas of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, population health, and informatics. Special emphasis will be placed on developing practical solutions to real-world problems which significantly impact human, animal, and ecosystem health.

The Fellowship is named in honor of Dr. Carlos Pijoan, who was internationally recognized for his work in the area of swine respiratory disease and the influence of swine production systems on the dynamics of microorganisms such as porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, Haemophilus parasuis, Streptococcus suis, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. He joined the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, where he was the founder and director of the Swine Disease Eradication Center and a professor in the Veterinary Population Medicine department.

Additional information concerning the Pijoan Fellowship is available online at the University of Minnesota Swine Center website.
