Position Announcement: Director of Science and Technology

NPPC is seeking a results-oriented scientific business professional with strategic leadership ability to fill the position of Director of Science and Technology. The Director's primary responsibility is to develop and implement all policies and programs related to a broad array of science and technology issues facing U.S. pork producers. This is a very high visibility position and the Director will have a broad-based understanding of the U.S. pork industry.

The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is the recognized national trade association that serves as the global public-policy voice of America's pork producers. Its Washington Public Policy Center manages the government relations and communications programs that are responsible for successfully monitoring, influencing and achieving the legislative, regulatory, international trade and political agenda for U.S. pork producers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director will work primarily under the direct supervision of the Vice President of Public Policy and joins an established team of respected government relations professionals, and will be responsible for providing scientific guidance to the NPPC Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors and other industry audiences.

The Director will deliver strong intellectual leadership and strategic vision in planning, budgeting, and executing the science and technology program of work. The Director will serve as a scientific and technical advisor to the NPPC lobbying team on public policy issues like animal health, handling and production, antimicrobial availability and usage, premise registration and mandatory animal identification, traceability, feed-food safety, public health and agro-terrorism. The Director will also coordinate all the activities of NPPC's Animal Health and Food Security Policy Committee.

The Director will work occasionally in close coordination with the International Trade Counsel and will provide scientific and technical support on international trade matters. These trade matters will include research, analysis and advocacy of scientific and technical issues as they relate to market access for U.S. pork exports and to trade problems that arise separate from the negotiation of new trade agreements.

The Director will passionately advocate NPPC scientific policies and programs with the Congress and serves as the principle liaison with federal, state, and regulatory authorities. The Director will work closely with the science and technology programs and personnel of the National Pork Board and other professional societies such as the American Association of Swine Veterinarians and the American Veterinary Medical Association. This position is Washington, DC based and requires primarily domestic travel with occasional international travel.

Requirements and Benefits:

Qualifications and Experience: The Director will possess a D.V.M. or Ph.D. in animal science with an excellent academic record. The Director must have achieved at least 5 to 7 years of proven relevant expertise through experience obtained in industry, private practice or a governmental regulatory body. The Director must be self-motivated, work independently and possess a strong sense of diplomacy.

Communication Skills: The Director must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and possesses the ability to set out a coherent argument in presentations and during group interactions. The Director writes in a firm, concise, and accurate manner with timely deliver. Strong interpersonal skills are essential. The Director will be called on to make public comments and statements to the news media and industry trade publications.
