The American Association of Swine Veterinarians' (AASV) Board of Directors held their fall meeting in Kansas City on October 2, 2007.

Board members nominated Drs. Paul Ruen and Karen Lehe for the office of AASV vice-president to be elected by the membership in 2008. The Board also approved life memberships for Dr. Leonard Seda and Dr. Dick Taylor.

Membership in the association has increased slightly year to date with the most growth observed in the affiliate and student member categories. US memberships were up slightly but Canada and Mexico showed a slight decrease. International membership also grew.

Paul Sundberg updated the Board on activities of interest at the National Pork Board. The PQA Plus program has been launched. So far 74 trainers and 504 advisors have been trained. 1,891 individual pork producers have been certified. He noted that Hatfield is the first packer to require both certification and site assessment. NPB will conduct PQA Plus advisor training at the AASV Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 8th 8:00am - 5:00pm.

The AASV Communications committee received funding to expand the number of podcast interviews conducted by student members at the 2008 Annual Meeting. A number of the interviews conducted during the 2007 meeting are now available for download on the AASV Podcast web page.

The Board also approved a motion to move their spring meeting to the Tuesday afternoon following the Annual Meeting. This will allow the AASV committees to meet on Saturday morning which will facilitate committee interaction with the association leadership. The move will also allow the Board to better evaluate the success of the Annual Meeting.

In addition, the Board approved the creation of 2 new awards, the AASV Technical Services/Allied Industry Veterinarian of the Year Award and the Young Swine Veterinarian of the Year Award. They also voted to change the wording describing the Swine Practitioner of the Year award.
