USDA lists pork facilities in Russian export ban

Russia has banned exports from four U.S. pork slaughter facilities, three pork cutting and packaging plants and one pork cold storage facility, according to an updated certification list on USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS)website.

According to FSIS, the following facilities will be ineligible to export to the Russian Federation as of Nov. 1:

Slaughter facilities

  • Swift Pork, Worthington, Minn.
  • Hormel Foods, Austin, Minn.
  • Sioux-Preme Pork Products, Sioux City, Iowa
  • Quality Pork Processors, Austin, Minn.

Cutting and packaging plants

  • Albert Lea Select Foods, Albert Lea, Minn.
  • Rupari Food Service, South Holland, Ill.
  • Amity Packing Co., Chicago, Ill.

Cold storage

  • Fulton Market, Chicago, IL.

Russian officials toured U.S. pork processing facilities July 30 - August 10, 2007 and imposed the ban based on the results of the inspection. FSIS has the authority to re-certify those facilities while it conducts its own investigation per an existing agreement with Russia. Guidelines for the recertification process will be published on the FSIS website.

Seventeen poultry plants were also banned following the inspections.
