Japanese MRL Video Available Online

An educational video discussing the implications of the recently enacted Japanese Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) is now available online at http://www.exportpork.com.

The AASV teamed up with the National Pork Board and Pfizer Animal Health to produce the video with input and additional sponsorship provided by Alpharma, Bayer, Huvepharma, PennField and Schering-Plough. The video comprises a panel of experts discussing the implications of the Japanese MRLs on various segments of the swine industry including veterinarians, producers, packers and the animal health industry.

Failure to comply with the MRL requirements could result in increased testing, rejection of product and ultimately the loss of the largest export market for U.S. pork products. This video discusses the importance of modifying withdrawal times to insure compliance with the MRLs particularly in finishing hogs and breeding stock.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers were asked to provide withdrawal times for all their products that would allow producers and veterinarians to comply with the new requirements. A list of those withdrawal times is available on the Pork Board's website and should be reviewed frequently to insure compliance. The AASV Pharmaceutical Issues Committee has compiled a set of recommendations to guide veterinarians when prescribing pharmaceuticals for use in swine herds. A key recommendation is to only utilize products specifically listed on the Pork Board's database.
