U.S. and Canadian Regulators Explore Carbadox Options

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and U.S. regulators are reportedly working to develop a program of inspections to insure there are no residues of a carbadox metabolite in pork products exported from the U.S. to Canada.

Health Canada is proposing including Carbadox (Mecadox) in its list of prohibited substances following the 2001 ban on product sales in Canada and its recent decision to also ban its use in swine intended for human consumption. Following stakeholder discussions involving Canadian and U.S. regulatory agencies in early October, the agencies agreed to develop a mutually satisfactory monitoring and testing program to insure no desoxy-carbadox, a carbadox metabolite, residues are present in the Canadian food system.

The development and implementation of an effective inspection system may prompt Health Canada to reconsider its proposed regulatory action.
