South Korean Officials Kill Pigs as Part of AI Control
December 27, 2006 —
South Korean quarantine workers killed thousands of pigs in an effort to control the spread of avian influenza.
Nearly 4200 pigs were killed at a farm in Asan, 55 miles south of Seoul following the outbreak of avian influenza last week. There was no indication that the pigs were infected with the virus and it appears the mass slaughter was a precautionary measure. The Agriculture Ministry ordered all pigs slaughtered within 500 meters of the outbreak site.
South Korea slaughtered about 5.3 million birds during a bird outbreak in 2003.
