Researchers Explore Listeria Genes

Researchers with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have sequenced the genome of three Listeria monocytogenes serotypes.

The scientists confirmed that the Listeria strains have 15 genes in the regulatory protein family which is more than found in most bacteria. Researchers are investigating the role of these extra gene sequences. They also determined that the three strains examined have very similar genetic content and organization.

It is hoped that this research will lead to better-informed decisions about control strategies and safety standards in the food industry as well as increasing scientists' understanding of the bacterium's virulence and persistence. Results from this and future research will aid in reducing foodborne illness by preventing Listeria contamination.
