Trichinosis Diagnosed in Pigs from Maryland Farm
July 19, 2006 —
The Maryland Department of Agriculture has announced that three pigs believed to have wandered off from a quarantined swine farm have tested positive for trichinosis.
The farm, located in Carroll County, Maryland, has been under quarantine since late April following discovery of the disease in a malnourished pig removed from the farm. The owner of the farm and his son have been arrested and charged with animal cruelty, feeding garbage to swine and selling contaminated meat, as well as federal charges of operating a slaughterhouse without a license from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Maryland officials plan to test approximately 80 more pigs currently housed at the farm. Officials don't think any customers have purchased or consumed pork from the farm since it was quarantined.
