FMD Reported in Turkey, Armenia and Congo DR

Recent Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks have been reported involving cattle in the Thrace region of Turkey, the Shirak region of Armenia (which borders Turkey on the west) and in Congo Democratic Republic.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in Ankara, Turkey notified OIE on July 11th of a new outbreak of FMD virus serotype A in a village in Cayirdere, Silivri district in Istanbul province resulting in 22 cases from 1000 susceptible bovines. This indicates the latest confirmation of the disease resulting from the most recent outbreak which began in January 2006. Click here to view a map of the region.

A newly recognized outbreak of FMD has been reported in the Shiraksyaya region of Armenia (map). In the village of Maliy Marash, 3 cases of FMD in cattle were reported; in Panik, there were 17 cases of FMD in cattle. These villages have been quarantined. Laboratory confirmation and viral serotype information are not yet available. FMD has not been officially reported in Armenia since 2002, the date of Armenia's last report to the OIE which declared the disease absent in the country.

Finally, an outbreak of FMD has been reported in Congo Democratic Republic by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock. On May 1, 2006, 9 outbreaks were reported to occur at Nord-Kivu in the northwestern most part of the country near Uganda (map). There was one outbreak in Nyiragongo (45 susceptible cattle, all becoming cases), 6 in Lubero (1051 susceptible with 638 cases and 8 deaths) and 2 in Beni (715 susceptible cattle with 127 cases). A total of 1811 susceptible cattle were identified, with 910 cases and 8 deaths occurring.
