Position Announcement: Postdoc Research Associate

The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for Postdoc Research Associates.

This position is at the center of swine medicine in the United States and would routinely interact with the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, state and federal animal health agencies, most of the top twenty-five pork production companies in the US and a wide range of international veterinarians, scientists and producers. Current postdoc research associates have been among the first to investigate field cases of Seneca Valley virus, leaders in developing an infectious lameness model and published the first study demonstrating NSAID delivery to piglets through the sow's milk. The successful applicant will be involved in clinical instruction of domestic and international veterinary students, applied research focused on swine medicine, and field investigations of disease outbreaks in client herds. Further, SMEC funds, the pursuit of an appropriate graduate degree and/or specialty board certification as part of the position. The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) is a unique collaboration between the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, AMVC in Audubon, Iowa, and swine medicine stakeholders throughout the United States. The mission of SMEC is to collect and synthesize the best practices for clinical swine medicine and to translate and disseminate those practices to stakeholders who can apply them to improve swine health, ensure pork safety, maintain sustainability, and conserve resources.

The primary responsibilities of this position include teaching, applied research to support SMEC objectives and clinical practice including field investigations supporting veterinarians and swine producers in the United States. Concurrently, the pursuit of a graduate degree (M.S. or PhD as appropriate) and/or specialty board certification is expected, and the costs of graduate study are provided in addition to the base salary and benefits.

Minimum requirements for the position include: 1) a DVM or equivalent degree by June 1, 2024; 2) eligible for State of Iowa Veterinary Licensure on or before the first day of employment; 3) have and maintain a valid U.S. state driver's license and the ability to be authorized to drive University vehicles on or before the first day of employment and 4) demonstrated focus on swine veterinary medicine.

Veterinary practice and swine industry experience is preferred. This is a paid position that also provides health benefits, tuition, continuing education costs, and use of a wide range of practice equipment and resources.
