FMD Outbreak in Brazil
October 10, 2005 —
The OIE was notified on October 9, 2005 of confirmation of an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease virus serotype O on a farm in the Eldorado District, Mato Grasso do Sul located in the southern part of the country. This outbreak involves 153 head of cattle in a herd of 590 cattle and 8 pigs. FMD virus serotype O had been previously reported in May, 2004 followed by confirmation of circulation of FMD virus serotype C in August, 2004.
Control measures, including area quarantines, surveillance zones, on-site inspections and epidemiological surveys, have been implemented. Animals in the infected herd will be euthanized.
