Position Announcement: Swine Veterinarian

Eichelberger Farms Inc. is seeking a Swine Veterinarian with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree to join our established and growing company based in Wayland, Iowa. The Swine Veterinarian will be responsible for providing practical and scientific support to our farm's operations personnel and company producers in order to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage in the pork industry. Candidates must possess advanced interpersonal communication skills and in-depth knowledge of the pork industry. Candidates must meet knowledge, skills, mental, and physical requirements. Prefer candidates with one year experience in the field but new graduates encouraged to apply.

Basic Functions

The Swine Veterinarian is responsible for providing practical and scientific support, in order to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage in the pork industry. The Swine Veterinarian is also responsible for direct interaction with company producers and providing verification of swine herd health ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures and production practices. The Swine Veterinarian will address herd health related concerns and will communicate them through the appropriate management team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serves as a scientific and technical advisor to operations personnel on matters related to swine veterinary medicine.
  • Works closely with farm personnel to assess health issues and coordinates with them to develop strategies to address those issues
  • Identifies animals in need of medical attention and communicates to the production management team
  • Collaborates in developing improved processes around production management, health management, genetic improvement, and biosecurity
  • Collaborates with existing consulting veterinarians as needed
  • Conducts and evaluates farm assessments
  • Prescribes and supervises appropriate treatments for the animals
  • Assists in training personnel on proper animal husbandry practices
  • Performs appropriate diagnostic tests to determine the cause of illness in the herd
  • Complies with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPS)
  • Ensures animals are being cared for daily, including water, feed and management
  • Complies with the practices and principals of biosecurity to safeguard the life and health of the swine herd
  • Ensures the welfare of all animals
  • Assists with other duties as assigned
  • Reports to Head Veterinarian

Education and Work Experience

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree with the ability to become licensed in Iowa and Missouri
  • 1 year experience preferred but new graduates are encouraged to apply

Knowledge and Skills

  • Possess advanced interpersonal communication skills
  • Possess knowledge of analytical techniques
  • In-depth understanding of the pork industry
  • Demonstrate knowledge of overall business strategy and operations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Thorough understanding of diseases and disorders detrimental to the welfare of swine

Mental and Physical Requirements

  • Demonstrate ability to excel within an accelerated work environment
  • Possess the motivation to be a self-starter and ability to work with limited supervision
  • Ability to communicate with various behavioral styles
  • Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability and willingness to travel
