Pigs Found Dead at Mexico Border Crossing

Texas authorities continue to investigate the deaths of 150 pigs in transit from Ohio to Queretaro, Mexico in late June.

According to published reports, the shipment of 2644 pigs was stopped at a border crossing near Brownsville, TX for a routine inspection. Apparently, paperwork issues delayed the border crossing resulting in the pigs being off-loaded into a Texas Department of Agriculture facility near the Brownsville-South Padre Island International Airport on June 26 and 27.

Reportedly, approximately 45 pigs were found dead on June 27 and the remainder on June 28. It is unclear exactly when the pigs died, whether in transit or at the facility. Texas Tech University professor of animal science Dr. John McGlone has been asked to investigate the situation. His findings indicate that some animals likely died in transit but he doubts the claim that most died before reaching Brownsville.
