Position Announcement: Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Animal Science

The Department of Animal Science, Pennsylvania State University (University Park, PA) seeks to fill a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with extension, research and teaching responsibilities, with a primary emphasis on extension. The extension responsibilities include developing educational materials to be used in extension education programs that contribute to improving the efficiency of Pennsylvania's swine industry, including collaboration as an active member of the Extension Livestock Team. The successful candidate is expected to conduct a robust, federally-funded applied research program independently and collaboratively with colleagues in the department, with possible areas of focus including one or more of the following: nutrition, herd health, behavior, nutrient management or reproductive biology. The College houses a world-class nutrient management research program and the department includes a strong group of reproductive biologists who represent the nucleus of the university-wide Center for Reproductive Biology and Health. Research will be conducted independently and collaboratively with colleagues in the Department, other appropriate academic units, other Universities, and/or industry. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching or co-teaching undergraduate courses in swine production and management and other areas of animal science consistent with the successful candidate's expertise. The successful applicant will be involved in advising undergraduate and graduate students.

As a member of the Extension Livestock Unit, the incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing meaningful educational programs using modern on-line tools and face-to-face formats. The individual will be expected to engage in extension activities that are consistent with the new Extension Business Model. This will include using and contributing to all capabilities of the "Atlas Platform" (http://agsci.psu.edu/atlas). He or she will also proactively plan, conduct and evaluate extension/outreach activities.

Qualifications:

Individuals must have either a DVM/VMD or PhD in Animal Sciences or other related field. The successful candidate will be expected to make important, cutting-edge scholarly contributions in their area of expertise. Applicants shall have strong indications of potential for excelling in undergraduate teaching and student advising. Candidates should possess strong leadership, writing, and communication skills to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, peers and industry clientele. An ability to relate to a diverse population of faculty, staff and students is required.
