Position Announcement: Research Scientist/Veterinary Pathologist

Phibro Animal Health Corporation seeks a Research Scientist - Veterinary Pathologist. The successful applicant will research and develop new diagnostic methods, technologies, and new products; perform necropsy on tissue samples and whole animals submitted to the Diagnostic Laboratory; and provide clinical support of ongoing development of autogenous products for customer veterinarians in collaboration with the Technical Services team.

Tasks/Essential Functions - Diagnostics:

  • Assist Phibro sales agents in expanding their market share through technical service, enhanced diagnostic tools and presentations, and visiting or contacting Phibro customers
  • Develop new diagnostic techniques focused on clinical investigation, disease epidemiology, and differentiation of isolates of the same species with the goal of vaccine development (or enhancement) for customer veterinarians
  • Perform bacterial isolation, identification, and propagation from Diagnostic submissions as needed
  • Perform viral isolations using cell lines that are currently available
  • Evaluate, characterize, and dendrogram isolates as needed
  • Perform gross pathology on diagnostic tissue and animal samples
  • Isolate various species of Mycoplasma and other pertinent pathogens for autogenous vaccine and possible commercial production
  • Develop, perform, and assist with molecular biology (PCR) protocols
  • Develop and perform bacterial and viral virulence testing and serological testing protocols
  • Develop and perform ELISAs, electrophoresis, and Western Blots as well as spectrophotometric analysis

Tasks/Essential Functions - R&D:

  • Assist in the development of new products for swine and bovine species
  • Research, evaluate, design, and perform research projects with the goal of presenting papers at professional industry meetings and for publication to enhance awareness of PVO offerings
  • Review research papers for assistance with R & D projects
  • Assimilate new technical information by networking with industry leaders and thinkers and academic subject matter experts
  • Develop and refine production media for autogenous production as needed for emerging pathogens
  • Interpret diagnostic findings for PAHC Sales staff and clients and assist in selection of isolates for use autogenous vaccines

Education/Experience:

DVM preferred, MS or PhD degree desired with 3 to 5 years of lab experience required.

Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret publications and convert knowledge to procedures in the laboratory. Prepare business reports and presentations for professional journals, technical protocols, and scientific reports. Be familiar with common research and diagnostic equipment as well as related software and hardware associated with this equipment. Be capable of conducting statistical analysis on data. Possess working knowledge of Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

Reasoning Ability:

Requires critical thinking to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Requires complex problem solving to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions and systems analysis to determine how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply mathematical formulas of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications as well as applying scientific rules and methods to solve problems.

Physical Demands:

Lift up to 50 lbs occasionally. Must be able to move from place to place in all areas of the lab. Must be able to stand and bend during most of the shift. Requires reasonable hand/eye coordination to perform various tests and good eyesight for calibrations and operation of lab equipment.

Work Environment:

Basic lab environment that requires the wearing of PPE.
