Position Announcement: Agricultural Animal Care and Use Program Veterinarian

The Agricultural Animal Care and Use Program (AACUP) and the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine (VCM) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) are seeking to hire a full time veterinarian. This is a shared appointment as an AACUP Veterinarian (90%) and as a Clinical Assistant Professor (10%) within the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine. Primary responsibilities as an AACUP Veterinarian (90%) are to provide clinical care, monitoring and assuring the health and well-being of agricultural animals used in research and teaching and as a Clinical Assistant Professor (10%), to assist in the delivery of the professional veterinary curriculum.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

AACUP Veterinarian (OCVR): 90% effort; Responsible for monitoring that adequate veterinary care is being provided for agricultural animals used at UIUC and for assuring that other aspects of animal care and use are following approved protocols and following standards and procedures of the Program of Veterinary Care for University agricultural animals.

Deliver veterinary care along with our veterinary providers and provide oversight of animal care and use, including animal husbandry and nutrition, sanitation practices, zoonosis control, hazard containment, and emergency responses. Conduct frequent facility walk-throughs to assess animal health, review medical records and records of pre- and post-operative veterinary care. Conduct periodic site visits to all on-campus and off-campus University agricultural facilities to assess animal health, review animal facilities, personnel, equipment, services, and adequate veterinary care. Has access to all University agricultural animals for periodic assessment of animal well-being.

Provide veterinary reviews of protocols and protocol amendments for the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Participate in IACUC facility inspections and in semi-annual IACUC program reviews. Observe, monitor, and investigates procedures and health of animals as requested by the IACUC. Participate in AAALAC site visits and USDA inspections.

Has regular and frequent communications and meetings with the Attending Veterinarian for Agricultural Animals (AVAA), the AACUP Director, CVM veterinary personnel, agricultural animal unit managers and staff, principal investigators and project personnel, and others as appropriate to carry out responsibilities of the AACUP Veterinarian. Supervise, mentor and provide professional development opportunities for the AACUP Veterinary Technician.

At the direction of the of the AACUP Director or AVAA, consult and advise principal investigators and project personnel on surgical and medical procedure and on anesthetics, analgesics, tranquilization and euthanasia. Ensure investigators and project personnel, agricultural animal unit managers and staff have appropriate training for planned procedures and experiments. Consult and advise the Occupational Health and Safety Specialist about potential or actual Occupational Health and Safety concerns.

To ensure adequate oversight of the quality of veterinary care provided to University agricultural animals (Swine, Poultry, Equine, Dairy, Beef and Sheep), the AACUP Veterinarian must remain knowledgeable about animal care and use regulations policies and about current standards for veterinary practices and procedures.

Clinical Assistant Professor (VCM): 10% effort; Participate in the training of veterinary students in the clinical and didactic professional curriculum of the CVM by collaborating with the other faculty in VCM for course delivery. These courses will span all four years of the curriculum and will include both clinical training and didactic lectures and discussions. The type and nature of the teaching responsibilities will be determined by curricular need, individual teaching skills and areas of technical expertise. Be an effective collaborator with other VCM and UIUC faculty in the department’s discovery program. These collaborations will be beyond the scope of the AACUP position and will involve meaningful intellectual contribution to others discovery programs. The weighting of responsibility between scholarly effort and teaching will be based on the skills of the successful candidate. This position will not have any service or clinical responsibilities to outside private clients within the VCM or Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH).

Qualifications:

DVM or equivalent degree.

Required: Veterinary experience with one or more agricultural animal species maintained at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Eligibility for a veterinary license and accreditation in the State of Illinois, an Illinois’ driver’s license and qualifications to drive a University vehicle. Must qualify to hold a DEA license. Familiarity with the Animal Welfare Act and 9 CFR regulations regarding animal care and use, the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Familiarity with husbandry and management practices used in agricultural animal production and agricultural animal research. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred: Experience in a regulated program of veterinary care or with regulated animal research. Hold specialty board certification (or interest/ability in obtaining certification) in a related specialty (e.g. ACVIM, ACT, ACLAM, ACVS, ABVP, ACVPM).

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Appointment Status:

Academic professional (90%) and Specialized Faculty (10%) appointment/12 month service basis. Benefit eligible position.
