Position Announcement: Large Animal Clinical and Regulatory Veterinarian

Michigan State University, through the Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), MSU AgBioResearch and the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), is seeking to hire a full-time veterinarian with primary clinical responsibility for agriculture species including swine, sheep, cattle, equine, and poultry used in teaching, research and production. This appointment is a shared appointment as a Clinical Veterinarian within the ORA (45%) and the Colleges of Agriculture & Natural Resources (30%) and Veterinary Medicine (25%) in the Health Professions (HP) faculty system. Michigan State University has established a centralized veterinary care program (Campus Animal Resources, CAR) supporting both agriculture and biomedical animal care and use at the institution. The successful candidate will join a team of three other veterinarians in CAR in their support of nationally recognized, AAALAC-accredited, teaching, research, and extension programs. The position reports jointly to the Attending Veterinarian/Director of CAR and to the Chair of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. The academic home of the successful candidate will be the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (LACS) which conducts research, teaching, clinical service and outreach with a focus on farm animal species, food safety and public health. The primary emphasis of the position will be to ensure the MSU farm animal care program meets all federal, state, and other applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.

Principal responsibilities will include providing clinical care, veterinary oversight, and outreach to University agricultural facilities including locations on the main MSU campus in East Lansing as well as regional facilities located throughout the state of Michigan (MI). The successful candidate will assist in IACUC service by consulting on and reviewing farm animal protocols, providing oversight of large animal health preventative medicine programs, guidance on biosecurity and occupational health issues, providing or developing training programs for animal workers, and overseeing or performing clinical and surgical procedures. After hours emergency care duties will be shared with colleagues from LACS.

Required qualifications:

  • DVM/VMD from an AVMA accredited school or equivalent; experience in large animal practice and biomedical research
  • Eligibility for a veterinary license in Michigan, a Michigan driver’s license, and qualifications to drive an MSU vehicle
  • Must qualify to hold a DEA license and be accredited by the USDA APHIS, VS
  • Demonstrated interest in animal science, poultry, and wildlife species, experience in clinical procedures and use of medical and diagnostic equipment
  • Maintain compliance with quality assurance guidelines, including drug application, vaccine and feed directives, and other standards involving livestock production
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact personably with all levels of staffing at the institution

Preferred qualifications:

  • Graduate training beyond DVM/VMD
  • Specialty board certification in a related specialty (e.g. ACVIM, ACT, ACLAM, ACVS)
  • Knowledge of regulations and policies pertaining to biomedical and agricultural research
  • Knowledge of livestock production.
