Canada: Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Update

The first new case of PED (PCR positive) since Jan 21, 2015 occurred in SE Manitoba in a batch-farrow sow barn. Follow up with the private veterinarian for this premises indicated that the initial presentation of this disease were clinical signs of diarrhea with no increase in mortality. The Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Development (MAFRD) EOC is open and operational. Epidemiological investigation of the PED positive farm is ongoing. Direct contacts, indirect contacts and farms within 5 km of the IP have been contacted. Farms within 5km of the barn are monitoring for clinical symptoms and sample collection from these sites is being arranged. Samples are expected to arrive at the lab tomorrow.
