Veterinary Corps Celebrates 100 Years of Service

June 3, 2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the Army Veterinary Corps. AASV is honored to have at least 4 members who have served in the Veterinary Corps: Tyler Bauman, Bill Brown, Jarod Hanson and Maryn Ptaschinski. If there are others I have missed, please let me know. The National Defense Act of 1916 established the Veterinary Corps with 57 veterinarians whose primary duties involved equine surgery and medicine. The history of veterinary involvement with the armed services, however, dates back to the Revolutionary War. Today, the approximately 880 personnel perform duties including food safety and security, animal health care, veterinary public health and research and development. Please join AASV in thanking all our veterinary servicemen and women. If you would like to learn more about the Army Veterinary Corps, there is a very interesting article in the June 1 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
