Position Announcement: Chief Executive Officer

Prairie Diagnostic Services (PDS) is a full service veterinary diagnostic laboratory serving the Prairie Provinces with an annual operating budget of $9 million and $5 million in capital assets. This not-for-profit corporation is ISO certified and has been delivering world class expertise in support of disease surveillance, animal, public and environmental health for seventeen years. The PDS laboratory is located in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine on the beautiful University of Saskatchewan Campus in Saskatoon. A Chief Executive Officer is required to lead the organization of 65 employees with a continued focus on client service, research and public protection.

As the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you report to the Board of Directors and collaborate with the Board to develop the vision and strategic plan for the organization. You are a dynamic and creative strategic thinker, capable of understanding and aligning the goals of stakeholders within PDS and developing proactive and innovative strategies to strengthen services, build business, and move PDS forward. With highly developed communication skills, you ensure strong and effective working rpationships and synergies with the Dean and faculty at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine.

Using your strategic leadership, management skills, and business acumen, you

  • Oversee the development and delivery of veterinary diagnostic testing and services for the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, Saskatchewan government, and the veterinary community inside and outside of Saskatchewan.
  • Lead and coach a team of highly skilled veterinarians and technical and administrative staff who are involved in diagnostics, research, teaching, business development, finance, and administration.
  • Implement effective human resources management strategies and a diversified funding plan to support growth.
  • Ensure the PDS structure and business processes are efficient and aligned with strategic plans and financial resources.
  • Build and maintain collaborative and value-add working relationships with the province, the university, the veterinary community in Western Canada.
  • Represent the interests of PDS at part of the national network of animal diagnostic laboratories and act as a spokesperson for PDS at public, industry, and community events.

As the ideal candidate, you have a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine (DVM) or a PhD in animal life sciences combined with a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or a business background and five or more years of business leadership experience. With a broad understanding and global perspective on business, agriculture and animal health, you are ready for your next leadership role.
