Senecavirus A Case Update

Researchers at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine have compiled a summary of the Senecavirus A (SVA) cases submitted to the ISU-Veterinary Diagnostic laboratory. The article includes a history of SVA cases in the U.S. as well as an update of recent diagnostic submissions. SVA positive cases have been sporadically diagnosed since the late 1980s. The incidence of positive cases increased significantly in the summer of 2015 peaking at 5 – 10 cases per week in August, September and October. The incidence of new cases declined in November and the lab has not diagnosed any new cases during the last couple of weeks in December. The lab reports a total of approximately 109 cases in 2015.
