After OMS Nebraska speaker Michael Luckey presented the film Sept. 9 to Newman Grove High School students, their teacher immediately emailed OMS the following message: “Things went great today – Michael did a great job presenting to both classes. The 9th grade students watched the video and the short discussion afterward went well. I thought the video was great; there are a lot of excellent talking points throughout the video! Thank you!” Comments from the Newman Grove students’ OMS evaluation forms also showed the film’s impact:

  • “This film contains many facts and gives a new meaning to farming.”
  • “It’s a good film to watch if you’re a skeptic about farming.”
  • “Farming needs to grow and our generation needs to get in the industry.”

A teacher at Woodward–Granger High School in Iowa offered these comments after OMS speaker Karen Hoare presented Farmland to her classes Sept. 15: “The students seemed to really like the video…. and were given a lot of new information. The video and discussion will be beneficial for future discussion and growth in knowledge for my students.”

A teacher in Eagle Grove, Iowa, is now trying to schedule Farmland so her entire town can see the movie.

Thirty–four (34) OMS Farmland presentations have been scheduled in seven states; 40 OMS speakers have signed up to do the presentations in high schools, technical colleges and junior colleges.

Teachers consistently praise OMS speakers for their presentations and want them to return semester after semester. The Farmland documentary provides another option for OMS speakers to help students better understand today’s pig farming and modern farming practices.

The Farmland documentary was produced by the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance and supported by the Pork Checkoff. OMS speakers show a 44–minute educational version of the film and then lead a discussion with students about it to help broaden viewpoints and address misunderstandings about pig farming and agriculture.
