Position Announcement: Residency Training Program in Nutrition and Toxicology

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University offers a unique residency training program in nutrition and toxicology. The resident will be based in the Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health (DCPAH) with training occurring in DCPAH, the MSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and the Production Medicine Section. At various times the resident will have case and teaching responsibilities in each of these areas. Additional training and experience will be provided within the State of Michigan feed regulatory agencies.

The objective of this program is to prepare the resident to qualify for specialty certification by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition and the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology. A further objective is to create individuals with diagnostic and regulatory expertise, based on a foundation of clinical training. The program will emphasize clinical, diagnostic, and regulatory aspects of animal nutrition and toxicology. Within the three-year program, graduate study towards a Master’s degree is expected. The Master’s thesis should be on a topic related to dietary exposure to toxicants.

The DCPAH is a full-service diagnostic laboratory fully accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians. Within DCPAH there are separate diagnostic service sections, two of which are designated as Nutrition and Toxicology. In combination, these sections have extensive analytical capabilities including HPLC, LC/MS, GC/MS, and ICP/MS. In addition, DCPAH provides a rich caseload that includes necropsy cases as well as many mail-in samples from across the US. The VTH is a full-service, tertiary care veterinary hospital receiving over 23,500 inpatients per year. It offers a full complement of support services including diagnostic imaging and clinical pathology. Within these venues, the resident will at times be responsible for diagnostic interpretation and treatment recommendations, as well as patient care in the hospital setting.

Direct training will occur under the supervision of two ACVN certified diplomates and a Board Certified Toxicologist. In addition, certified specialists in Veterinary Pathology, Internal Medicine, Surgery, and many other clinical disciplines are available to support the resident.

Successful candidates will hold a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine. They must be eligible for veterinary licensure in the state of Michigan. One year or more of applied veterinary clinical experience is desirable.

This is a three-year program with annual reappointment dependent on satisfactory progress and performance.
