Harker, Karriker Prevail in AASV District Elections

Drs. Jeff Harker and Locke Karriker have been elected to serve 3-year terms on the AASV Board of Directors, representing districts 4 (Indiana & Michigan) and 6 (Iowa), respectively.

Dr. Karriker is a new addition to AASV's governing body, filling the position vacated by Dr. Alex Ramirez, who was recently elected AASV Vice President. Dr. Karriker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine and serves as the director of the Swine Medicine Education Center at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2014, he received the AASV Howard Dunne Memorial Award in recognition of his contributions and service to the association and swine industry.

It took a coin toss to decide the results of the District 4 Director election between Drs. Jeff Harker and Megan Inskeep. In an unprecedented occurrence, the two candidates were tied at the conclusion of the voting period. Since the association bylaws do not address the handling of a tie, the AASV officers concurred that if the candidates agreed, a coin toss would be an impartial and efficient way to break the tie. The tie-breaking coin toss took place with both candidates and all four officers present during the Program Planning Committee meeting in Perry on Friday, May 22.

As a result, Dr. Harker, who also serves as AASV's delegate to the AVMA House of Delegates, begins his second term on the AASV board. He is a partner in Swine Health Services, LLC, a swine-dedicated practice in Frankfort, Indiana. In addition, Dr. Harker is very active in representing the swine industry through Operation Main Street presentations to veterinary students, dietitians, and other civic organizations.
