SMEC Offers Two New Courses

The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) at Iowa State University announces two new course offerings: 1) SMEC Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) Diagnosis and Management, and 2) SMEC PRRSV Diagnosis Review. The latter course is offered free to AASV members who currently hold a DVM degree.

SMEC's PRRSV Diagnosis and Management course covers diagnostic tests, methods, approaches, analysis, and evaluation of PRRSV. It provides general knowledge of virus elimination and methods to manage herd and economic losses due to the virus. The course consists of a two-week, on-site module that combines structured site visits and classroom activities and is now available to veterinarians as well as veterinary students who are enrolled in the second half of their third year of curriculum and beyond. Course dates can be found at the SMEC website: http://www.smec.iastate.edu/training/smec-porcine-reproductive-and-respiratory-syndrome-virus-prrsv-diagnosis-and-management/.

SMEC is also offering PRRSV Diagnosis Review free of charge to AASV members currently holding a DVM. This is an online, self-paced, overview module created with funding assistance from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. After completing SMEC PRRSV Diagnosis Review, an individual will be able to determine diagnostic objectives, identify animals within a population to sample, explain sample collection techniques, select diagnostic tests, and correctly interpret laboratory results.
