Position Announcement: APHIS Veterinary Medical Officer, Swine Health Center

USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services, Veterinary Services (VS) is announcing a swine commodity health specialist position located in the Avian, Swine, and Aquatic Animal Health Center, Surveillance, Preparedness and Response Services. Duty sites under consideration are Raleigh, NC; Riverdale, MD; Ames, IA, Des Moines; Fort Collins, CO. Note: This announcement is scheduled to close on September 23, 2014. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the development and implementation of outreach efforts to the identified stakeholder groups. The incumbent assists in efforts to communicate VS activities, services, policies, regulations, and procedures to agency stakeholders, VS field personnel, APHIS and other government officials, representatives of foreign countries, and other interested parties.
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of commodity specific business plans.
  • The incumbent supports working within a team-based working environment. As such the individual supports unit collaboration and cohesion and cooperation in processes that promote continual improvements in unit methods, approaches, and efficiency.
  • The incumbent assists with the development of current-year and long-range budget plans to support swine business plans.
  • The incumbent develops, implements, and evaluates animal disease surveillance activities for swine health programs focusing on those activities that support a comprehensive approach to surveillance.
  • The incumbent provides general and technical supervision and consultation on epidemiologic problems relating to swine health programs
  • The incumbent establishes new or clarifies existing surveillance and emergency management procedures for swine health programs and provides advice to both State and Federal veterinary and wildlife managers.
