  • The European Union is tightening the rules on Canadian and American pork imports in light of new cases of a deadly pork virus that has ravaged the North American industry for more than a year.
As of Tuesday, all live pig imports from Canada and the U.S. to Europe will be tested for porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED). The shift is a preventative measure designed to protect European farmers and livestock against the virulent disease, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhea in pigs.
The requirement was approved by the European Union’s Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health. [Source: iPOLITICS.ca, June 10, 2014]
