PEDv Update – July 17, 2013

  • The latest case report update from the National Animal Health Laboratory Network is now posted on the AASV PED web page. You will notice some corrections and changes in the data from previous weeks. The veterinary diagnostic labs and the NAHLN are doing the best they can to provide accurate, informative, timely and useful reports but they are limited by the quality and completeness of the information provided by the person submitting the case. It would greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of these reports if the submission forms are filled out completely and accurately. Of particular importance are the age of the animals sampled and the Premises Identification Number (PIN) of the premises from which the samples came (not the corporate headquarters or the owner’s po box or the veterinarian’s office, etc.). We are relying on the information provided by the diagnostic labs to monitor the spread of this disease and the more accurate the information the better the analysis. Like they say, “garbage in, garbage out” and you hold the key to ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of the data.
  • Dr. Jim Lowe provided us with a preliminary abstract of a study he conducted investigating the possibility of PEDv contamination of livestock trailers at harvest plant lairages.
