Position Announcement: Veterinary Public Health Residency

The Veterinary Public Health residency at the University of Minnesota is the first to be approved by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM). Our residency program draws applicants from around the world and offers the unique opportunity to pursue an MPH at one of the nation’s top schools of public health. Alumni work in government, industry, and academia and we are proud of their 100% success rate in achieving ACVPM diplomat status.

Public health veterinarians reduce human exposure to hazards and diseases that arise from domestic and wild animals, work to control and eradicate zoonoses, including new and emerging diseases, protect the food supply from food-borne pathogens and bioterrorism, and educate the public.

Our two-year program provides residents with public practice experiences in preventive medicine, public health, and population medicine. Residents are assigned a faculty mentor as well as a peer mentor. Residents teach and take active roles in research and service projects that provide training in requisite competencies.

Residents without an MPH or other graduate degree concurrently pursue the MPH while in the residency program. Those in the MPH program earn their degree from the University of Minnesota’s School of Public Health.

Residents are hired at 75% FTE (30 hours/week). Benefits include health, dental, and disability insurance as well as tuition allowance and PTO. Approximately 10 hours per week are available for MPH coursework in the School of Public Health. **Acceptance in the VPH Residency program does NOT guarantee admission into the Executive Program in Public Health Practice (EPPHP). A separate application is required for the academic program.

Candidates need not apply for the MPH while applying to the VPH Residency; however, all employment offers are contingent upon candidate's acceptance into the EPPHP program.
