New Rules For Veterinary Medicine Pass The Missouri Senate

Operators of farming supply companies are raising concerns over a bill approved by the Missouri Senate that would give the state Board of Pharmacy control over prescription veterinary drugs.

For farmers, that would require them to have a vet maintain medical records for all prescriptions written for their livestock, but Sen. Dan Brown, R-Rolla, the bill's sponsor, said it would not apply to over-the-counter drugs purchased at feed stores.

Still, Sen. Rob Schaaf, R-St. Joseph, sought unsuccessfully to add language that would exempt certain farm supply companies that have been in operation longer than 36 years, fearing the language in the original bill did not provide enough certainty that over-the-counter products wouldn't become subject to new regulations.

Similar legislation is working its way through the Missouri House of Representatives.
