More U.S. Beef, Pork Exports going Overseas

U.S. beef and pork exports in February continued a trend of a rising portion of national production going overseas and more money coming back home, the U.S. Meat Export Federation said today.

Some 27 percent of U.S. pork production in February was sold outside the United States and incremental value reached $51.48 per head, compared with 25.2 percent and $43.81, respectively, year on year. Total pork exports jumped 15 percent in value and 8 percent in volume over February 2010 levels.

U.S. beef exports in February, meanwhile, accounted for 13 percent of total production and incremental value of per-head fed cattle slaughter reached $182.12, compared with 10.6 percent and $126.50, respectively, in February 2010. Total beef exports were up 47.2 percent in value and 25 percent in volume over year-ago levels.

Export of U.S. pork in February reached 172,022 metric tons valued at $434.4 million. For the first two months of the year, totals were 337,160 metric tons valued at $831 million, up 11 percent in volume and 17 percent in value. Mexico, Japan, Hong Kong/China, South Korea and Canada remain the top five export markets for U.S.pork.

U.S. beef exports in February reached 89,787 metric tons valued at $371.7 million. Through the first two months of 2011 totals were 179,460 metric tons valued at $727.3 million, up 24 percent in volume and 45 percent in value. Mexico, South Korea, Canada, the Middle East and Japan were the top five markets for U.S. beef.
