Pfizer Clarifies IMPROVEST® Inaccuracies

Recently, Pfizer Animal Health was made aware of several inaccuracies when conducting a routine internet search on IMPROVEST® and we wanted to take this opportunity to provide clarification.

The three inaccuracies are:

  1. "Chemical castration" - IMPROVEST® is NOT a chemical castration product. It is an immunological product, meaning it uses a pig's natural immune system to temporarily reduce the substances that cause boar taint, an off odor present in pork from some male pigs. IMPROVEST® is administered via a small injection just under the skin behind the ear, and its effect is temporary. Chemical castration as used in pigs is injected into the testicles and permanently stops testicular function. It is also performed early, negating the natural gains of boar growth.
  2. "Permanent" - IMPROVEST® does NOT have a permanent effect. Its impact is temporary, lasting long enough to prevent off odor in US production systems before the antibodies dissipate in the pig's system.
  3. "75 percent of pigs are castrated" - Globally and in the U.S., more than 95 percent of all male pigs are physically castrated.

While we are limited in what we can say during this FDA pre-approval review period, it is very important that we maintain accurate and consistent information. I would greatly appreciate that if you hear any of these inaccuracies to please correct them in your discussions internally or with customers.
