Swine Veterinarians to ``Examine the Evidence'' in Phoenix

Attendees will seek to understand and apply evidence-based medicine during sessions at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians. The meeting is scheduled for March 5-8, 2011 in Phoenix, Arizona. The AASV room block at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort is open for reservations.

Dr. Randy Jones, AASV president-elect and the meeting's program chair, explains that the 2011 program theme, "Evidence-based practice: How do we get there?" builds on last year's meeting theme, Implementing Knowledge, by examining how we obtain knowledge and fill the gap between "what is known" and "what is done."

The centerpiece of the meeting, the Monday morning general session, opens with the Howard Dunne Memorial Lecture, presented by Dr. Locke Karriker, associate professor and swine medicine section leader at Iowa State University. Karriker will address the topic "Evidence-based practices: Myths and applications." He will be followed by Dr. Joe Connor, swine practitioner and president of Carthage Veterinary Service, Ltd, who will present the Alex Hogg Memorial Lecture on the companion topic, "Science-based medicine: What are the application barriers?"

The Monday morning general session continues with a presentation on "Science-based swine welfare: Where are we and where are we going?" by Dr. Anna Johnson, assistant professor of animal science at Iowa State University. Dr. Wes Jamison, associate professor of communication at Palm Beach Atlantic University, concludes the morning program with a presentation on political advocacy.

Monday afternoon offers three concurrent sessions to choose from, with presentations on breeding herd health management, grow-finish, and antibiotics & welfare. During the single general session on Tuesday, attendees will focus on the all-important topic of PRRS, examining current knowledge and looking forward to achieving the goal of eliminating the disease.

Pre-conference seminars on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning provide attendees with the opportunity to obtain in-depth information on specific areas of interest. This year for the first time, the Research Topics session will be held on Sunday morning. The poster session begins at noon on Sunday and offers veterinary students, researchers, and commercial companies another venue for sharing information. The Sunday afternoon schedule includes the popular Student Seminar in addition to three Industrial Partners sessions.

Registration is limited to veterinarians and veterinary students. Registration materials will be mailed and online meeting registration will be available in late December.
