Korea's Heavy FMD Toll

The outbreak of foot and mouth disease in South Korea appears to be under control.

More than 55,000 animals have been destroyed since the first outbreak in January.

It is estimated this cost $281 million.

The last reported case of FMD occurred on May 7 which brought the total number of cases to 17.

Meat and Livestock Australia Korea regional manager Jim Lim said all Korean farmers who travelled overseas would be monitored as it was believed this year's outbreaks were caused by a farmer who returned from a FMD area in China.

The South Korean Government has decided it will not offer compensation to farmers if they visit high-risk FMD areas.
