Position Announcement: Director of Science and Technology

The Washington, D.C. office of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) seeks a Director of Science and Technology to develop and implement policies and programs for a broad cross-section of science and technology issues on behalf of U.S. pork producers.

The Director joins an established team of government relations professionals and will deliver strong intellectual leadership and strategic vision in the science and technology mission area. The Director will:

  • Be responsible primarily for the daily management of animal health and production issues such as: antimicrobial availability and usage, animal health and handling concerns, mandatory animal identification, traceability, food safety and related public health issues.
  • Provide scientific and technical support on international trade matters, including: research, analysis and advocacy of scientific and technical issues as they relate to obtaining and maintaining market access for U.S. pork exports, and on trade problems that arise separate from the negotiation of new trade agreements.
  • Perform senior-level liaison and representation functions to explain and advocate NPPC policies and programs to the organization's membership, allied industries, stakeholders, other livestock and agricultural groups and consumer organizations, as well as state, federal and international regulatory authorities.

Position requires: DVM or PhD in a field associated with animal science or equivalent and relevant area of study; proven relevant expertise and experience in industry, private practice or in a government/regulatory body; excellent written and verbal communication skills; the ability to present cogent and relevant presentations in large and small group interactions; advanced writing skills; and successful experience integrating with teams of other professionals to develop and implement strategic responses to critical issues in a timely manner. This position requires significant travel.
