GlobalVetLink Introduces New Electronic Veterinary Prescription Service

Concerns that excessive livestock antibiotic use could increase drug-resistance among human pathogens has put veterinarians under scrutiny. GlobalVetLink's eVRxSM, a secure web-based tool to support responsible antibiotic use, is designed to help veterinarians optimize prescribing habits and insure continued food safety.

In harmony with the latest industry guidelines including the American Veterinary Medical Association's judicious use principles and the National Pork Board (NPB) responsible use directives, GlobalVetLink puts technology to work to insure healthy animals and a safe food supply. The recently introduced internet-based eVRxSM program simplifies the process of documentation and thereby preserves the veterinarian's ability to identify, monitor and prescribe the most appropriate and effective antibiotic for treating porcine, and other live stock, infections. Dr. H. Scott Hurd, former USDA Deputy Undersecretary for Food Safety and Associate Professor at the Veterinary Diagnostic & Production Animal Department of Iowa State University, recognizes the value of the Electronic Veterinary Prescription project. "Antibiotic use is a vital tool in preventing illness and maintaining a safe food supply." states Dr Hurd, "Although I have not been convinced this practice is a source of increased resistance, it is vital that veterinarians are able to clearly demonstrate responsible use. The eVRxSM system is an exact fit. It makes record keeping simple and accessible, which in turn, helps to maintain the safety and efficiency of pork and other food animal production."

The eVRxSM system is a cost-effective, standardized and secure 3rd party approach to veterinary documentation that is nationally recognized. Based on an existing GlobalVetLink system used to track and regulate food animal movement in the U.S., eVRxSM offers a comprehensive tool that readily integrates with many common practice management applications. "Our new eVRxSM service provides practitioners and technicians alike with a simple and effective means for superior documentation." Kevin D. Maher, President and Founder of GlobalVetLink continues, "This tool quite literally provides a communication advantage the industry has never had. As such, we are confident it will make the veterinary community's job of insuring responsible antibiotic use and food safety that much easier."
