APHIS Issues Garbage-feeding Swine Rule
December 16, 2009 —
USDA's Animal Plant Health Inspection Service has adopted a final rule geared toward the very limited practice of feeding garbage to swine.
The rule amends the swine-health-protection regulations to better clarify their applicability to the treatment of garbage that consists of industrially processed materials that may be feed to swine in the United States.
Such materials are subject to the same treatment requirements as other regulated garbage, except for materials that meet the definition of "processed product" included in the new rule.
The rule was necessary to ensure that garbage fed to swine is treated to inactivate disease organisms that pose a risk to the U.S. swine industry.
