Position Announcement: University of Minnesota Public Health Residency Program

The University of Minnesota Veterinary Public Health Residency Program is a two year program during which veterinarians gain specialized training in veterinary public health practice. The program, designed for early and mid-career veterinarians provides experiences that qualify and prepare them to take the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine board examination. Residents are assigned to a variety of projects and activities with an eye toward experiencing the full spectrum of teaching, research, and service. In addition to project work, residents will pursue a masters of public health (MPH) degree through the world class academic program offered through the School of Public Health.

Required Qualifications (must be documented on application/resume):

The candidate must have a DVM degree (or equivalent foreign degree) by start date, plus at least one year of experience in either a private practice, corporate, or government setting in one of the following areas: wildlife or domestic animal preventive medicine; infectious disease diagnosis and treatment; food animal production, harvesting or processing; public health infectious disease surveillance and outbreak investigation. Candidate must also have academic qualifications for admission to the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two or more years of relevant experience as described above in either a private practice, corporate, or government setting. Excellent oral/written communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work in teams and a high level of experience with a variety of computer software programs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Provide assistance in responding to new and emerging issues and the delivery of public practice services in the areas of Animal Health and Food Safety. Collaborate with Veterinary Public Health (VPH) faculty in teaching VPH curriculum. Participate in applied research activities in the areas of disease surveillance, risk analysis and epidemiologic investigation of important food safety and zoonotic pathogens.

Program/Unit Description:

The University of Minnesota Center for Animal Health and Food Safety has one opening for an annually renewable, non tenure track appointment at the rank of Veterinary Public Health Resident. Program duration is approximately two years. The position offers the opportunity for post-DVM training in veterinary public health, including completion of an Executive MPH program. In addition, individuals will gain credentials that meet the requirements for the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine Board certification. The Center for Animal Health and Food Safety will be hiring one Resident with a start date of January 2010 and two with a start date of May 2010.
