Student Seminar Abstracts due September 25; New Submission Process

Application materials are now available on the AASV website for veterinary students wishing to participate in the Student Seminar on Sunday, March 7 during the AASV 2010 Annual Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska. Submissions are due September 25, 2009. Changes have been made to the submission process, so students and their faculty advisors are encouraged to access the application materials now, and review the information carefully.

New this year, students will complete a Student Seminar Application Form to submit with their abstract. In addition, a Co-Author Confirmation Form must be submitted by a faculty advisor or veterinary co-author. The Co-Author Form is a brief substitute for the letter of recommendation that was required in past years. Both forms are provided in editable pdf format, for saving and submitting electronically using free Adobe Reader software (version 8 or later required).

Additionally, some changes have been made to the judging scoresheets, so students may wish to review the scoresheets as they prepare their abstracts for submission.

The Student Seminar is sponsored by Alpharma Animal Health, and provides the opportunity for 15 students to make oral presentations of research, literature reviews, and case studies pertinent to swine medicine and production. Students whose abstracts are selected for oral presentation receive a travel stipend of $750 from Alpharma to facilitate attendance at the meeting, where their oral presentations are judged to determine the winners of scholarships ranging from $500 to $5000. Funding for the scholarships is provided by Alpharma (top $5000 scholarship) and Elanco Animal Health (fourteen additional scholarships totaling $20,000).

Student abstracts not selected for oral presentation are considered for poster presentation at the meeting. Alpharma and the AASV provide a $250 stipend for each student who is selected and participates in the poster session.

Complete information for preparing and submitting abstracts is available on the AASV Web site at http://www.aasv.org/annmtg/2010/studentseminar.htm. For more information, contact the AASV office (Tel: 515-465-5255; Fax: 515-465-3832; E-mail: aasv@aasv.org).
