Ohio Legislature to Consider Formation of Livestock Care Board
June 24, 2009 —
Two Ohio state Senators, Bob Gibbs (R-Dist. 22) and Jason Wilson (D-Dist. 30), have introduced legislation calling for the formation of the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board.
The Board would be charged with establishing and implementing standards governing the care and well-being of livestock and poultry in the state of Ohio. In carrying out its purpose, the Board shall endeavor to maintain food safety, encourage locally grown and raised food, and protect Ohio farms and families according to the resolution.
In establishing and implementing these standards, the Board shall consider factors that include, but are not limited to, agricultural best management practices for such care and well-being, biosecurity, disease prevention, animal morbidity and mortality data, food safety practices, and the protection of local, affordable food supplies for consumers. The 13 member Board will include the Director of Agriculture (who will serve as the chair), 10 members appointed by the Governor and one appointee each from the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate.
If approved by three-fifths of the Ohio General Assembly, the proposal will be added to the November general election.
