Maine to Ban Gestation Stalls and Veal Crates
May 20, 2009 —
Maine Gov. John Baldacci this week signed legislation that will prohibit gestation crates for sows and veal crates for calves in the state beginning in 2011.
The bill passed both of the state's legislative chambers unanimously, according to a release by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
HSUS strongly backed the legislation.
Maine becomes the sixth state to pass a similar measure, after California, Colorado, Florida, Arizona and Oregon.
